Benefits

The BERT fund has the full support of the major employer associations and employee unions operating in the building and construction industry. The benefits paid from the Fund help provide members and their families with financial assistance in the event of ceasing employment because of redundancy or relief from financial burdens.

The benefits result from the investment of contributions paid by the employers and the interest earned from the investments of the BERT Fund is used to provide training grants for the industry, pay the benefits associated with the welfare fund and to meet the costs of administration of the fund.

Since the BERT Fund commenced, it has paid out over $420,000,000 in benefits to 150,000 members to assist workers in their time of need.

Additionally, the Fund has contributed in excess of $40 million for industry training and $88,000,000 for member benefits.

Claim Benefits

Funeral Benefit

Financial members of the CFMEU and Plumbers Union are covered by a funeral benefit of $10,000 in the event of death of either the member / the members wife, husband or defacto / the members dependent children up to the age of 16.

Child care benefit

Child care payments may be made on a discretionary basis for financial members of the CFMEU and Plumbers Union whose partner dies and who have children aged up to thirteen (13) years of age who are dependents of the member.

Dental Benefit

The BERT Dental Scheme provides dental coverage to financial members of the CFMEU and Plumbers Union and their dependants, for accidental damage to sound and healthy teeth occurring outside of working hours up to a maximum of $3,000 per financial year.

Dependant means the members spouse (or defacto partner) and includes unmarried financially dependant children of the member up to16 years of age, or up to age 25 if a full-time student.

Only damage to sound and healthy teeth which has occurred as a result of an accident or incident outside of working hours will be considered. Damage to dentures, bridges and plates that are less than fifteen years old will be covered.

Any claim received will only be considered for payment if the claim is submitted to BERT within six (6) months from the incident date.

Ambulance Benefit (NT Only)

The BERT Ambulance NT Scheme provides cover to financial members of the CFMEU and Plumbers Union and their dependants, for the cost of ambulance travel occurring outside of working hours.

This benefit is only available to union members as specified and working within the Northern Territory.

Dependant means the members spouse (or defacto partner) and includes unmarried financially dependant children of the member up to16 years of age, or up to age 25 if a full-time student.

Any claim received will only be considered for payment if the claim is submitted to BERT within six (6) months from the incident date.

BERT Employer Contributions to Superannuation Fund (BUSSQ & CBUS ONLY)

Should you wish to redirect your future BERT Employer Contribution to a Superannuation fund, please download and complete the relevant redirection application form, from the forms section of this website. To be eligible for superannuation redirection;

  • Minimum BERT balance exceeds the nominated threshold amount as per your Employer's EBA
  • This amount must be maintained, and should the amount reduce below the minimum threshold limit (i.e. via a claim for some or all of your account balance) the redirection will cease and any future BERT Employer Contributions will be paid into your BERT account
  • Your contributing employer must be an employer that has signed an EBA, and that EBA allows for a redirection of BERT payments into a superannuation fund.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance covers you, your accompanying spouse/defacto and dependent children when travelling for more than 250km from your usual place of residence within Australia or overseas for up to 90 days.
